In a groundbreaking move, Saudi Arabia is set to introduce the first sub-zero snow destination and outdoor ski resort in the Gulf, part of NEOM's $500 billion mega project.

The mega resort has officially entered the construction phase and is expected to accommodate 7,000 permanent residents. Additionally, over 700,000 annual visitors are anticipated to flock to Trojena, eventually becoming home to not just the ski resort, but also shopping centres, nightlife venues, and more than 100 different sports. The site is also planned to host festivals, music, and fashion events, along with winter slopes for skiing and other cold-weather activities.

Around 75% of the snow required each ski season will be man-made, the incredible feat of engineering with Trojena: it will all be made with renewable energy and entirely carbon neutral. “In terms of skiing, all energy used will be from renewable sources, with the water coming from zero discharge desalination plants. We expect to recover and recycle the melted water from the snow production from beneath the ski slopes.”

“It’s about the size of Belgium and will welcome approximately 3.5 million tourists by 2030.” - Niall Gibbons, Neom’s Head of Tourism

Does it get cold enough to snow in the Gulf?

Skiing in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia, is typically not possible due to the warm climate. However, Trojena experiences sub-zero winter temperatures and has a year-round moderate climate that is cooler on average than the rest of the region. Paired with cutting edge snow making technology, Trojena looks set to offer some of the best snow during the winter season.

During the summer months Trojena will offer over 100 luxury outdoor activities for guests

The Trojena Resort is part of the bigger growth hub in the region, including THE LINE, Oxagon and Sindalah. All part of the NEOM development.
